Wildflower grew out of nearly two decades of figuring out what a salon could be—

Patrick began his career in hair around 2010, building his foundation and receiving exceptional training at C’est Chic Salon while developing an increasingly specific point of view about color, cutting, chemistry, and the relationship between a stylist and the person in their chair.

The longer he worked behind the chair, the less interested he became in simply performing services. Why did some color remain beautiful for months while other color seemed to fight the person wearing it? Why were damaged hair and difficult color so often treated as problems to overpower rather than information to understand? Why did the traditional salon experience sometimes ask clients to surrender control instead of inviting them into the process?

Those questions eventually became the foundation for everything that followed.

From Stylist to Studio

In 2022, Patrick left the traditional salon environment and opened Patrick James Studio 17 in Andover, Massachusetts.

For the first time, the environment could evolve around the work rather than the work having to fit within an existing salon model.

The change quickly became about much more than independence. Patrick began reconsidering everything: the products entering the space, the ingredients he was willing to work with, how appointments were timed and priced, how consultations happened, what clients were taught about their own hair, and even how the physical environment affected the person sitting in it.

Within months, it became obvious that Patrick James Studio 17 was no longer an accurate name for what was being built.

Wildflower Color Bar was born.

Why Wildflower?

Wildflowers don’t become beautiful because someone forces them into uniformity. They grow according to their environment, their individual structure, and what they naturally are.

Hair isn’t particularly different.

Wildflower developed around the idea that exceptional hairdressing doesn’t require fighting the person, the hair, or the environment to create something beautiful. It requires understanding what already exists well enough to recognize what it has the potential to become.

That philosophy became visible in the work: natural, lived-in color; dimensional blondes; precision cutting; restorative and corrective work; and transformations designed to belong to the person wearing them.

It also changed the experience surrounding the work.

More Than a Hair Appointment

Over time, Wildflower became increasingly holistic—not as an aesthetic or a marketing term, but as a way of looking at the entire experience.

What goes onto the hair matters. What enters the body and environment matters. How someone feels in the room matters. Their history with salons matters. Their lifestyle, maintenance habits, sensory needs, budget, time, identity, and relationship with their appearance all provide information.

That thinking shaped Wildflower into the vegan, low-tox, trauma-informed salon it is today.

The studio itself became part of the service: an indoor garden retreat designed to feel markedly different from the stimulation of a traditional salon. Holistic practices, sensory considerations, sound, light, ritual, and nervous-system-conscious techniques became integrated into the experience alongside advanced color chemistry and precision hairdressing.

The technical and the holistic were never intended to compete with each other.

One makes the other more complete.

Where Beauty Takes Root

Today, Wildflower Color Bar is an independent salon in Andover, Massachusetts specializing in natural, lived-in hair color, restorative and corrective color, dimensional blonding, precision cutting, and highly individualized hair care.

But the original questions are still being asked.

Can we get a better result while doing less unnecessary damage? Can color look more like it belongs to the person wearing it? Can clients understand why something is being done instead of simply being told to trust the professional? Can a salon be environmentally and ethically conscious without sacrificing performance? Can expertise and human connection exist in the same room?

Wildflower exists because the answer to all of those questions is yes.

And it will continue to evolve for exactly the same reason it began: curiosity, education, experimentation, and the belief that there is always a more thoughtful way to do the work.
